Week 52 - Last Day of the Year

It has been a bit quiet around here as I've been busy on various projects and such over the last few weeks. I've been taking the time to prepare models for the next year, work on some terrain and play some games. Overall it has been nice to have a break from painting and do something else with my spare time.

First thing in the new year will be finishing a commission I've had sitting for a while, some Age of Sigmar models and some more Hordes models. After that I have prepared some board game models to get my early numbers up and my wife has 'volunteered' me to paint some Zombicide models for a friend who got a set for Christmas. I should have over 200 models assembled and base coated already so I wont need to worry about clear weather for prep work in the near future! I've got Deadzone/Warpath, Myth, Dropzone Commander, Dropfleet Commander, Zombicide and Infinity all good to go. Odds are I will have something pique my interest in the middle of the year that needs to be painted in a hurry but at least I have a good start.

Week 46 - Infinity Terrain Board WIP

I've been taking advantage of some sales this week and picked up some terrain, specifically so that I am closer to realising the Infinity table I've had in mind for some time now. A quick photo below.

I still need to 3D print a bunch more floor tiles to get even close to finishing just this one board, but it is a start.

Week 45 - More Gallery Posts

No visible progress this week. I made some more progress on the commission models and have assembled and spray painted some more Mercs and Dropfleet. I should be well set up for next year at this rate. I have posted some more pictures into the gallery for now. Some of these are less than complete, I have more models to finish and so will add to the galleries over time.

Week 44 - Updating the Gallery

No painting progress the last few weeks. It has been pretty busy in that time so to keep things going I took some fresh photos and posted them to the gallery. I will try and do this whenever I don't have new models to show. Eventually that will bring the gallery up to date.

I have been putting more models together, trying to set myself up for next year a bit. I have some commission models on my desk that I need to get finished, hopefully I will have some time next week.

Week 41 - A New Game in Town

With all the push last week to finish my Halo stuff for playing I didn't realise I was only 2 models away from completing my goal for the year... So I went ahead and painted a bunch of models for Dropfleet Commander! I've completed the ship bodies for 3 cruisers and completed 1 cruiser, 4 frigates and 2 void gates. Once I've played a couple games I will settle on which weapons I want for the cruisers and finish them off. This leaves me just one void gate short of having a playable starter set, which I wasn't able to fit on my spray painting jig. I have 5 more Shaltari to go before I have completed all I have. Then I can either start on my Scourge or wait for KnightWolf's pledge to arrive and get the rest of my stuff. Picture below.

For the rest of the year I will be working on various projects, finishing off some of those stragglers from my to do list and commissions that have been progressing slowly. I have been using my 3D printer again, making floor tiles and walls. And a pretty sweet stargate (that took about 10 hours to print!) so I hope to keep on doing those. It is going to take forever to get enough for a table and I will need heaps more filament but I don't have any pressing stuff to make on the printer, so why not?

Week 40 - UNSC Fleet Reporting

It took a bit of effort but I managed to complete all of my UNSC for Halo this week, 52 models all up. I went for a battle worn white scheme, simple but looks good at a distance. Picture below.

We got a game in this week, it plays quite nicely. The usual Spartan Games mechanics are in there, the exploding dice are kept under control though by preventing adding more dice. This makes the big ships really hard to take down without concentrated fire. Every ship base has 3 hit points which makes the number of tokens on the board nice and small. We played an intro game which skipped some features, we will add them in as we play a bit more.

Week 39 - Covenant Inbound

The Halo Covenant have been completed. That is the last 5 ships done, so that I can now move on to the UNSC ships. This coincided with me receiving a shipping notification for my DropFleet Commander, so I really need to get a move on and try out this game before it (potentially) gets shelved for a long time...

I hope to finish up this years models in the next couple weeks, which frees up my time for other projects like terrain and the garage, in between commission work. A large portion of those will be UNSC ships I hope, there are a lot of little frigates and I have a couple more Mercs civilians to do to round it all out.

Week 38 - A Halo in the Stars

I got the first batch of the Halo Covenant ships done today, for a total of 23 models completed. This was mostly the small ships with one medium ship. I've gone for something quick so that I can get them on the table, but it is also fairly effective in its simplicity I think.

There are empty flight pegs in there waiting for some of the larger ships. I have 3 medium and 2 large to go for the Covenant. And a big pile of ships for the UNSC, as they tend to come in twice the quantity. I still have about two dozen of those to undercoat first though, but I am thinking that they will have a similarly simple scheme so that I can test out the game with painted models soon.

Week 36 - Another Commission Complete

So after barricading my painting desk with a large lego project for the last week and a half I managed to finally wrap up the commission models I have had for a couple months now. I've been slipping on my painting quantities so really need to find another stack of 'easy' models to push me through to the end of the year. I may be able to do that with my Halo models, I've just undercoated the last of the Coveneant ships today, now to figure out the scheme I want. I should be able to do a bunch of the UNSC ships pretty quickly too once I get some undercoated.

The three treemen are all technically touch ups as they all had some degree of paint on them to start with. I also got the black wash on 4 more Prussian vehicles to bump me up to a weeks worth. Time and energy have been hard to find lately, some easy ones would be nice for my last 80 or so to go.

Week 34 - Slinking Back In

So its been over a month since my last post, largely since it has been over a month since I actually painted anything! It has been a long and sometimes rough month but I'm now back and should be posting a bit more reliably, at least I hope. I've got 2 commission models that just needing basing to show this time.

I have another two to go on this commission, but they are touch ups on an existing paint job so shouldn't be too difficult.

Week 29 - Prussians Make Landfall

So I made a sudden leap in progress this weekend. I have pretty much finished up 44 Prussians for Dystopian Wars, I'm making the models themselves fairly plain and putting the colour into the basing instead. I need to go pick up some green foliage clumps to finish the bases and add a splash of more colour. Photos below.

I have another 4 that are almost done, but am going to wait until more are up to the same state before finishing them off. I still have a heap of these to go, including the Metzgers, and I recently picked up some air and sea units as well. Plenty to do but they are fairly easy which is always nice. Hopefully I can get some games in with them soon too.

Week 28 - Security Forces Complete

I gathered up some energy and finished up the last 19 SecFor for Mercs: Recon. I've also been working on my Prussians which mostly involves figuring out the basing. I'm going for winter snow basing and I had an unopened container of it which helped. The scale really complicates things as at 1:1200 most basing material would be half the height of a person! I'm not usually that worried but I am trying to keep things roughly right for now. Once I nail it all down it should be fairly easy to get most of it painted up.

Week 27 - Under the Weather

So everyone at home is sick. It is making us all miserable and making painting a bit difficult, not to mention how cold my painting area is. I managed to get another 5 SecFor painted for Mercs. I also started on my Prussians for Dystopian Wars and I am currently trying to find a scheme and balance of work that I am comfortable with.

Week 25 - Full Steam Ahead

Thanks to my lovely wife I got some decent time to myself this weekend and managed to finish some models. I finished a commission model and 14 worker models for Mercs. Photos below.

I've still got some more Secfor to do for Mercs but they shouldn't take too long. I may even finish them all this coming week. Other than that I have started getting my Dystopian Wars Prussians assembled and hope to get the bases ready so I can begin painting them all. Following that may be my Halo fleet. Maybe.

Week 24 - Gone Dark

Its been a long three weeks, helping relatives pack and shift houses, so progress has been slim on the models front. I've made some progress on my only commission model but it still has a way to go. I have also managed to get all the SecFor assembled and undercoated for Mercs, and have been assembling my Infinity Nomads as well. Hopefully I will have some time to work on all of these in the coming weeks. At the very least the SecFor will help me spring back from this slump.

Week 21 - Mercs Progress

Its been a bit of a dog of a weekend but it is over now, back to work... I squeezed in some painting around everything going on and between the fairly constant rain making spray painting difficult.

Despite deciding I wasn't going to paint board game stuff I decided that the Mercs: Recon SecFor needed to be easily identified during a game. This was an opportunity to do what I wanted for Zombicide correctly, as I went a bit astray on those. So here are the first 30 SecFor, in easily identified colours.

So the brown ones are level 1 and the blue ones are level 2. To keep things easily identified I stuck with a simple rule: Monotone + skin. This lets them be identified as people while also stopping me from going overboard with detail colours muddying up the visuals. I have SecFor level 3 and 4 to go as well as the civilian assets. The civvies will be greyscale and level 3 will be green. Jury is still out on the level 4, possibly red...

Week 20 - Photos (Yay!)

Well, one photo anyway... I've been out of town all weekend but managed to finish up another 12 Zombicide models during the week, so finally a photo. See below.

I'm almost done with these now. Just 6 more to go, the original survivors in their zombie forms. Really looking forward to completing this lot, no more zombies for a while I think! I also just received the last of my Mercs kickstarter stuff. I'm going to set up a couple games to figure out the rules while I get all the figures assembled. They may get some basic paint on the 'baddies' and better paint jobs on the Mercs teams, I've not decided yet.

Week 19 - Busy, Busy, Busy

More radio silence and still nothing to show. I finished the commission models just before the client arrived to pick them up and subsequently forgot to snap a photo of them. It's been a long couple weeks...

I have however had a couple games this week, including some more Zombicide. We tried out the hardest and longest challenge and managed to make it out without any casualties, 5 hours in. We nearly lost it only an hour into the game though, I had accidentally left the zombie dogs expansion in the deck, making things much more difficult. All in all a good game though. I've got the remaining survivors on the desk and about half way completed. I've still got lots of stuff on the calendar so I'm not expecting to make much progress in the next few weeks. I can try though! I also now have another commission model to work on as well.

Week 17 - Nothing to Show

Its been a rough couple weeks, with lots of life stuff getting in the way, no game nights and no progress to show. I've just about finished my two outstanding commission models though, they just need their bases done. I've also spent a bunch of time pulling stuff off the 3D printer, I have a full PHR army for DZC now, I just need cards and infantry. I should also get back to printing more technicals for the resistance to finish that army off but they are a bit labor intensive because of how quickly they print and the quantity needed. I have another commission model being dropped off during the week as well. My next few weekends are pretty booked so progress is going to continue being slow for at least another month. I hope to scrape enough time together to finish off the partially painted resistance vehicles during that time though.

Week 15 - More Vehicles Off the Printer

So a bit more time spent this week with the 3D printer, I've now got about 1k points worth of Resistance vehicles ready to use. I have expanded my set of designs to include wagons, buses, drills and 'small' hovercraft. Not much progress on the painting front again this week as weeknights have been hectic. I have got a weeks worth of models done though and made progress on my two commission models at the same time, so at least I'm not falling behind.

More rough paint jobs for the time being, I will do a touch up job on them later. The paint seems to hold fairly well which is good. In order to make this stuff playable I need to pick up a set of cards and a bunch of infantry options. Other than that is some flavor units and a command option. A Leviathan is far to big for my printer so if I do a design up I'm probably going to have to split it up for printing. As it stands the 'small' hovercraft only just fit!

Week 14 - 3D Printing an Army

Something a bit different this week. I had spent a bunch of time on various sites looking for 3D models to use for DZC, as a way to bolster Knightwolfs PHR forces and change up our games a little bit. Unfortunately most of what is out there is designed to replicate something from a video game or movie. This makes for highly detailed models that just don't scale down well or require lots of supports, making the models look bad. So I gave up and started designing my own models, specifically designed and tested to print properly at 10mm scale. The results of the first batch are shown below, Resistance technicals. I have got some PHR units as well but they took a ride in Knightwolfs game case so wont be available for painting until next week.

The paint jobs are a little rough and there are a couple different print quality levels in there but they more than serve their purpose. This will give our new gaming buddy some new toys to use this week, there are another 6 awaiting paint as well, maximizing the unit. The rocket mounts may get reviewed in time to something nicer but these can stand in for a warlords retinue in the future.

I need to figure out what I am going to design next, based on what is economical and I will want lots of. The PHR walkers are going to be based on Mechwarrior designs but will take a lot longer than more trucks for Resistance...

Week 13 - Zombicide Nearly Complete

I managed to keep up with my proposed pace from last week and complete 22 more Zombicide survivors this week. With the ones not quite ready last week that adds another 31 to my total. It also leaves me with just 18 before I have completed my entire Zombicide collection. Photos below.

I've also had an inquiry from a new potential client for new commission models which is pretty cool. He is mostly looking at Infinity models at this time so it will require some different methods to my usual Hordes work.

Week 12 - Getting on with it.

One of the things I always want to get to each year is terrain. The usual problem is that I tend to have a bunch of models to finish during the holiday season, which tends to be a bit busy. So the thinking is that if I put a bit more effort in now I may have time later to get some terrain done in the latter part of the year. So to make that most likely to work my plan is to try and paint 20+ models per week. That gives me a lot of margin for error and would put me on track for finishing my main painting goal by the end of June. It will take quite a bit of effort to maintain though so we will all see how that goes.

So this week I have finished 12 Zombicide models with 9 more drying (so the photo will probably come next week). The trick with these is having to paint them in pairs, the survivor and zombivor together, in order to keep the clothing similar colours.

I still have about 50 of these to go and a pair of commission models as well so next week will be interesting to see if I can keep up with my new weekly target.

Week 11 - Scourge on the March

I didn't have a lot of time to work on models this week so I focused on some easy ones. I finished 12 more Scourge, all of them infantry stands. I'm just about out of assembled Scourge now so will have to spend evenings this week  building the last of them in time for the long weekend.

I should be getting two more commission models sometime next week. Hopefully I can get them done along with the rest of my Scourge over the weekend.

Week 10 - Table Upgrade and More Scourge

Another productive week despite the family having a cold. I completed 7 more Scourge, mostly transports this time. I also spent the day making a new gaming table and workbench in the garage. This will let me play 4'x8' size games as the old 4'x4' was no longer suitable. This will let KnightWolf and I play some bigger games of DZC, among others.

I've had that gaming table since early 2014, built for playing Warmachine. I didn't get much use out of it until the last six months though and it has proven to be too small. Of course I am supposed to be finishing off my garage but I never seem to finish any of these projects! Even the table isn't finished, I need to put a surround on it and add some dice areas. Soon though (probably...)

Week 9 - More Scourge Complete

This has been a busy weekend. My Daughter turns 2 tomorrow so we had her party yesterday. We have family visiting (for the party) and both my mother and mother-in-law are staying in my house. So luckily I got my painting done early in the week! I've got 20 more Scourge complete, which puts me ahead by almost a week on my goal, which I'm definitely going to need...

I've still got a bunch of Scourge to go but this does make my forces look a whole lot nicer. And after next week I have another 2 commission models coming my way so I'm going to have to try and get as much done as I can this coming week if I want to stay ahead.

Day 65
71/65 Painted/Days passed

Week 8 - Work Complete

Whew. Another commission is complete. These things really take a lot longer than I am used to with my own projects. There are so many more details on WarmaHordes figures than I can cope with for bulk models. But thankfully this lot is done and there are only a couple more on the horizon at this stage. Here are the 7 models I've just finished.

So I'm still behind by a weeks worth of models but now I will have a little more time to work on my Scourge. During evenings anyway, as it is my daughters second birthday next week. That has come by really quickly!

Day 58
51/58 Painted/Days passed
Goals:

Paint remaining Zombicide zombies - 19/19
Build and paint a full Malifaux crew - 7/4

Build and paint remaining KOW Elves - 0/15
Onslaught miniatures - 11/54

Week 7 - Working Away

So I've been pretty busy the last couple weeks which has made progress pretty slow. I have a little to show but there are a lot of models part way finished in the background. There are 4 DZC and 3 Malifaux models to show for the last fortnight.

I am also making progress on the commission models but it is all pretty slow at the moment. Hopefully I will get some time to finish some models this coming week.

Day 51
44/51 Painted/Days passed

Commission models - 3
Paint remaining Zombicide zombies - 19/19
Build and paint a full Malifaux crew - 7/4

Week 5 - Catching Back Up

So I spent the last long weekend working on the garage and not doing much painting. I did spend time during the week painting though, finishing up some Zombicide and Malifaux and a pair of last years goals as a result. I also got my first batch of Onslaught 6mm miniatures finished. Photos below.

The Onslaught minis are really nice. I hope to use them for Warpath in 6mm scale as that seems like it will work better than 28mm. I just have to wait and see what the forces lists are finalized into and pick some appropriate bases. So this is adding up to 32 models (5 per base on the 6mm scale ones...) and gets me back up to speed for the yearly goal.

I have a bunch more commission models on my desk again so that is likely what will be consuming my time for the next couple weeks. After that I have the Zombicide survivors to do in order to finally wrap up the whole Zombicide set.

Day 37
37/37 Painted/Days passed
Goals:
Commission models - 3
Paint remaining Zombicide zombies - 19/19
Build and paint a full Malifaux crew - 4/4
Finish painting Infinity Morats - 0/1
Paint all DZC Scourge - 0/45
Build and paint remaining KOW Elves - 0/15
Onslaught miniatures - 11/54

January Loot Cate

The January Loot Crate theme was "Invasion" and cost $28 USD or about $43. Lets look at what we have.

The contents:
X-files shirt
X-files torch (including batteries)
5th Element Multi-pass
Space Invaders figure
Aliens facehugger plushie
Two retro movie poster prints
Looter pin (unlocks a free digital comic)

The shirt is pretty nice, its a soft material and is officially licensed. Its also just generic enough to wear as I am not very familiar with X-files...

The facehugger plush is pretty nice and includes a rubber band to hold it to your face, should you wish. The multi-pass is a movie prop replica, looks to be reasonable quality. The space invader figure is awesome. I like that Loot Crate are doing pins now, hopefully that stays as they are way nicer than the badges. This pin also unlocks a free digital comic book!

Last up are a pair of art prints based (or replicating, I'm not sure) a pair of old school invasion movies. They are printed on a nice card stock too.

So this was a very solid offering. Now I'm not an X-files fan (I was a bit young for that when it was first out!) but the items are all decent, the paper items are high quality and the bonus digital item was really good. These last two crates have made me reconsider cancelling my subscription, the next one will really help me choose one way or the other. It has also made me realize what I am passing up with the Marvel crates as these last two Loot Crates beat the pants off the Marvel one and cost me about the same.

The next theme hasn't been spoiled just yet, but there will be a shirt in every crate for 2016.

December Loot Crate

The December Loot Crate theme was "Galaxy" and cost $28 USD or about $43. I signed back up to take advantage of some extra discounts, lets look at the haul this time.

I lost the boxed photos like in my last post so just the one here too.

The contents:
'Ugly sweater' print shirt
Han Solo Pop! vinyl
Halo tin and game item
Star Wars socks
Galaxy Quest patch
Badge

The shirt is pretty cool, it is nice to have something not tied to a show or game. The socks are awesome and I'm not one to wear anything other than black socks. The Han Solo pop is nice and an exclusive. The Halo tin is okay as is the Galaxy Quest patch.

So this was a pretty good box, lightly holiday themed shirt but otherwise normal. Compared to the Marvel box there just isn't any contest, Loot Crate was way better. The January box should be arriving in the next day or so and the theme is "Invasion."

December Marvel Collector Corps Crate

The December Marvel Collector Corps crate theme was "Guardians of the Galaxy" and cost $45 USD, or about $70 NZD. This crate has been slammed pretty hard online and I'm posting it up pretty late but lets see what we got.

The contents:
Scarf
Comic
Star Lord mug
Groot and Rocket bobble ornaments
Pin and patch

So I accidentally wiped my camera memory card before pulling the pictures of everything still in boxes so this photo is all I'm going to do. If you have seen the past crates I've posted I'm sure you can guess why the internet was furious with this one...

Lets start with the big item, the mug. It is a 3D mug, an exclusive version to fit in with Funkos mug range (like this.) I said this with the Venom mug I got from Loot crate, I hate this kind of mug. They are hard to use, ugly and have to be hand washed. At least this one has a passable paint job, but a simple printed mug would have been WAY better. A lot of nerd-rage was around this replacing an actual Pop! figure, which everyone would have preferred, myself included.

Replacing the shirt this month is a winter themed scarf. It is a nice scarf, feels like it is good quality and the pattern is good. Its a shame that this arrived in the middle of summer and that it doesn't get cold enough for me to ever wear scarves. Would have preferred a shirt, much like most other people not living in the colder climates.

The two ornament figures are the high point of the box but I am unsure as to who thought making bobble heads into ornaments would be a good idea. As it stands, the figures can't stand by themselves so I will have to hang them to display them, making them no longer bobble...

That leaves the comic, pin and patch. The cover on the comic is nice, but the actual content of the comic is a bit poor. Half of it is about Thing, with cameos from Rocket. Pin and patch are good and will add to the pile.

So this was a huge letdown of a box. It furthers my stance that holiday themes are a bad idea and that Funko/Marvel had a good formula to the boxes so why change it? After the feedback they have had I imagine things could go back to the old formula pretty quickly, but it may not be soon enough. The next box theme is "Deadpool" which leaves me in a sticky situation. I could drop the subscription because of this box and miss out on some cool stuff (assuming they learnt their lesson), or choose to keep the subscription and end up with more junk (because Deadpool may already have been finalised). It is a lot of money to gamble with and I have to figure it out before I am billed in February. Or forget and have it decided for me, whatever works!

Week 3 - One Goal Down

So I'm gradually picking up momentum on the painting front. I've finished up the commissions from last year which gives me another 3 models complete. The client dropped off another 7 models to do though, so I will be cracking on to them fairly soon. At least there aren't any runes on these ones!

I should be able to get on with some of my own stuff while I sort out the assembly on the new commissions so there is the possibility that I will actually catch up on my painting target.

Day 17
5/17 Painted/Days passed
Goals:
Commission models - 3
Finish painting Infinity Morats - 0/1
Paint remaining Zombicide zombies - 2/19
Paint all DZC Scourge - 0/45
Build and paint remaining KOW Elves - 0/15
Build and paint a full Malifaux crew - 0/4

Week 2 - A Slow Start

10 days in and I am already behind. I usually try to be ahead by about a months worth at this stage but instead I have finished just 2 models. This is largely because I have been focusing on finishing my commission models, which are large and high detail so require quite a bit of attention. All things considered I hope to finish them up next week. Here are the two zombies I finished.

These are the opening steps to the year and at least I am working towards completing last years goals. Onward and upwards, at least I can still catch up my deficit.
