The Final Day of 2013

Sorry for the radio silence over the holiday period. There isn't any new progress to report from this time, I have just been assembling models and generally relaxing as the year began to wrap up. So with nothing new to show I guess I should try to wrap up the year and make some new years resolutions...

So in 365 days I managed to paint 383 models, completing my primary goal for the year. I finished up 3 projects and started at least 10 more. I posted 57 times through the year with over 180 photos. At my peak I produced 54 models in a week (way back in week one, no less!) and one of the models I painted this year won 3rd place in a painting competition. I also posted 3 tutorials. Overall I am fairly happy with the outcome for the year. Sure I could have painted more (or better) but I have several shelves full of painted models to show for my efforts, something I wouldn't have had otherwise. Many of them still need basing though!

Where does this leave me for 2014? Well with the baby on the way (just 9 more weeks!) hobby time is going to become more scarce. This means I will need to focus on getting small projects done and not over extending by buying too much extra. I also want to prepare a much better entry for the terrain competition this time. Last years was rather rushed... I still have mountains of plastic, with more on the way, but by continuing what I have done this year I can slowly make my way through it all. At least I hope so.

What I want to finish next year:

  • Complete my entry for the terrain competition.
  • Build a Kings of War army for playing with.
  • Build and paint a set of Deadzone battle groups.
  • Build and paint a full Malifaux crew.
  • Finish all of the Dreadball teams and MVPs.
  • Finish painting an Infinity group.
  • Make some headway on my Warpath fluff.
So painting-wise next year isn't very ambitious. Maybe 200 models total. I doubt I would get round to painting the KOW army as that would likely double the workload. Aside from this I want to get a permanent home table sorted out for the garage. Somewhere I can play on the weekend or in the evenings. I will probably convert my (not so) portable table into a permanent fixture, seeing as it never did fit into my car...

Well that wraps it up for the year. Thanks heaps for sticking through my ramblings for the year, chances are I wont be posting as regularly in 2014 (I will certainly try though) but you are likely to get stuck with my sleep deprived ramblings instead!

So until the new year stay safe and play for the enjoyment of the game.

Week 49 - Spinning a Yarn

Not a lot of progress this week. I have been mostly preparing models this week so am getting pretty close to having all the dreadball teams assembled. I have been thinking a bit about what got us all into the hobby and what keeps us in it. Many of us got into wargaming through GW, for better or worse. While many of us have left that abusive relationship behind there is something that always pulls at us, making us tempted to go back. The 40K fluff is that little string. It is a completely unnecessary thing yet once you get past the models, the game and the hobby it is the fluff that drives us. It is what makes us choose a colour scheme, play out scenarios and spin our own little stories in a massive universe.

So where am I going with this? Well for many game systems we have all moved on to there just isn't that same hook. Some are better than others, Infinity and Malifaux have quite deep backgrounds and history for their factions. Now while Mantic games are fun they are particularly sparse in their backgrounds. What is really lacking, even from the fans, is specific history, background for specific corporations, plague outbreaks, veer-myn hives and so on. So I have been thinking about writing some specific backgrounds for my models. I would like to go the 'whole hog' with this and get it all fleshed out, military background, corporate dreadball team(s), strategic assets, rival corporations and anything else I can think of.

If I get it done well enough I plan on rolling it out for my forge fathers and veer-myn. I also plan on making the templates available so that others can write up their own. If everything goes to plan then maybe it can all get put somewhere public and really flesh out the Warpath universe at least a little bit more.

I've also figured out a way to re-purpose an old terrain project for something I'm more likely to finish, not to mention get more use out of. But that can be for another time. There is quite a high chance that there wont be a post next week, or it may be very early or very late. I haven't figured that out just yet!

Week 48 - The Seventh Centurions Take to the Pitch

Another week down, man the end of the year is coming up fast! I finally finished up the full Zee team (currently called the seventh centurions) as have trimmed and assembled the last of the Nameless team. As far as Dreadball season 3 goes I have 6 Teratons to assemble, a few MVPs and then all of the boosters to max out the teams. I aim to at least have all the basic teams and MVPs assembled before the years end, it would be good to try a few games in the last couple of club nights for the year. The Zees are below.

I've got quite a bit going on between now and years end but I do have a couple things I think I can finish up by then. I think I can probably finish up my Rail Crew for Malifaux, maybe even my Kirai Crew as well. I would like to trim up and assemble 1000 points of my Abyssal Dwarves but that may be pushing it... With all the Deadzone news coming through it looks like mine will be shipping in a couple weeks, making it unlikely to be with me before I finish work for the year. That is a shame but not entirely unexpected. At least I will be able to focus on what I already have!

Week 47 - Assembly Line

So there isn't much in the way of completed models this week. I have got 13 Zees on the painting desk which are almost table ready. They may get done for next week. I have however managed to trim and assemble quite a few models this week and I aim to at least have all the season 3 Dreadball teams assembled for next weekend. I also assembled all of my Rail Crew for Malifaux, the bases are coming along as well.

I have got into a bit of a rhythm with the model assembly in the last couple weeks. Part of this is due to a PP Insider blog I read a couple of years ago. It talked about the best advice one of the guys had been given about the hobby, "always be trimming." What this boils down to is having a little 'away bag' complete with a set of files, knives and clippers and a small bag of models. This away bag is what you take on business trips, weekends away or (in my case) to work for lunch breaks. You just sit down in your off time and trim some models. This frees up your hobby time for painting and gaming rather than filing off mould lines and clipping from sprues. This is also doable during those TV shows your partner forces you to 'watch.' As a result I can usually do a couple models per day at a relaxed pace and spend my weekend time painting.

With Deadzone shipping beginning next week I took the opportunity to trim up a set of 5 Enforcer models. They should be quite fun on the table and will really speed up getting Deadzone onto the table in the new year.

Week 46 - The Ball Starts Rolling...

So an early post this week due to unforeseen circumstances. Not a great deal to report either but things are ticking along once again. I have started to trim up the Asterian Dreadball team so that between Knightwolf and myself we will have all the teams available for games. Then I can start on the Terratons and Nameless. I played a couple of short games using the Zees and Terratons this week, the first was Zees vs Terratons. My poor little monkey clones were stomped by the turtles, it proved very difficult to get past them and with the Zees all being Jacks I just couldn't get the upper hand. The second game was Terratons vs Marauders. This game was also in favour of the turtles, I benched two of the Orc guards in the first rush and just kept scoring one point strikes. Knightwolf just couldn't reclaim much ground but did miss a couple shots that would have made things more even. Painting-wise I have finished up the test model for the Zees, shown below.

The scheme isn't too complicated but I have foregone the dip this time around as I see myself taking these guys, so they can get a decent paint job. Unfortunately the lack of direct light has made the shot a bit dark. There will be better shots when I get more done...

I am going to find myself with some time in the next few days so will be able to trim and assemble some more models. Unfortunately I wont be in a position to paint them but I can at least replenish my stores of assembled models. I have even started planning out my bases for my Ten Thunders crew and am fighting the urge to make a themed table for them... A steampunk rail yard would be a fun table to play on... I have also determined the base colours for my Morat Aggression Force so may have a test model done for those depending on how my week shapes up.

The year is winding up fast and I am nowhere near hitting 500 models, there is still time of course but even that is pushing my maximum output! I may have to settle for 400 but that is still a decent amount for a first try. The real question is 'can I keep it up next year?'

Week 45 - Painting in Full Scale

So I have been painting this weekend (a full 18 hours worth!) but not the kind usually found here... I took the weekend to paint the nursery. I had the clever (stupid) idea to paint the nursery to look like clear skies and rolling hills. This was so it would tie in well with all the Winnie the Pooh stuff the wife has bought. Did I mention that this would be the first time I was painting an entire room? By myself? Really should have made it easier on myself...

At any rate here are some photos of what it looked like before:
During:
And after:

With furniture:

So understandably I haven't done much else painting-wise this weekend. I have had a chance to assemble a full roster of Zees for Dreadball though so I hope to get those done fairly quickly as they are tiny little fellows. I have updated the model list with all the extra Dreadball bits too, just short the missing season 2 bits.

Week 44 - Rallypoint, Zombies, Infinity and Steampunk

Hey I remembered to post this week, huzzah! So this was a particularly busy weekend, with a Halloween party on Friday evening and Rallypoint all weekend. The party was fun, there were some nice little costumes and quite a few liked what the wife and I were wearing. No pictures yet as my camera was still set on 'models' mode when people were taking pictures, so they all came out blurry. I hope to get a photo up soon though.

Rallypoint is the annual Hamilton event for non-GW games. This year I was playing the PG role and doing demos instead of playing in the tournament. I also took a couple breaks to play some Infinity and Zombicide. The Infinity games were a bit of fun, Knightwolf and I got a win each, we seemed to both get convincingly smashed so we do need to get our heads around our models and when to hold back, rather than rush forward. Dice played a factor for us both and a little was put down to the table layout too. Unfortunately we were so preoccupied playing that I forgot to take any photos. Oops...

The Zombicide game was epic. We were doing quite well, right up until a spawning got one of our survivors killed and flooded the board with zombies. It all went downhill from there, until this happened:

Yeah... That is every zombie from the base game and all the toxic zombies, in a pile, in a single square... We managed to claw back a win though, setting fire to the pile (worth about 100 xp) with a flame-thrower and finishing the scenario, which required us to get to that square while it was zombie free. (Get to the choppah! quite literally)

I managed to start assembling the last 2 Haqqislam models which should be ready for under-coating this week. I also received the (almost) last shipment of Dreadball, which has had a few parts delayed. With some luck I will get them together before the end of the year!

Week 43 - Last Minute Stretch

Another late one this week as I have had my nose to the grindstone (or sewing machine in this case) working on my costume for Halloween. So far I have made decent progress on a vest and complete a pair of trousers and goggles. I also whipped up some earrings for the wife's costume. The photos are below.

The hat needs some more work...

The vest still needs more work, primarily it needs ironing flat, followed by adding buttons. I didn't have the interfacing to make the front panels stick together, which makes it a bit baggy. I also stuffed up the first one, as it turns out linings are a real pain to do, especially when they have one particular side to use. I'm not totally happy with it either. I feel like it needs something more.

Then again that may be just because it isn't finished yet. Who knows. I need to spend tomorrow working on the terrain boards. I can work on the vest during the week, in time to finish up for the party on Friday.

Interlude - Zombicide Season 2 Kickstarter Un-boxing

Almost missed this weeks post, oops! I didn't finish anything new this week so instead I will go through some of my latest acquisition:
Flash drive for scale, the box is huge!
Ooh shiny...
So I did a quick check and all the appropriate boxes were shipped to me, but when I opened up the Prison Outbreak box it was missing some of the card pieces... In particular the shiny new features special to that version. Darn... So that has to sit on the shelf while I wait for replacement parts.

I have just enough time to go through two of the smaller, canine expansions though! First up is Zombie Dogz.

Nice little box.
Look at all the zombie doggies!

So this is a neat little expansion if you have the main game. Basically you get 20 zombie dogs and spawning cards to add them to your games. What is special about them is that they activate 3 times per turn... Making them a serious threat, they are also targeted last, so they hide behind other zombies in the same square.

3 sets of cards, in 3 different languages. This is a nice way to handle it, since crazy people can just throw all of the cards in at once...
The undead dogz themselves.
The sculpts are kind of cool coming in 4 unique designs and 3(?) breeds. Each is made of two parts, base with centre peg and dog, so they are really easy to re-base for something else. They should be easy to paint up as well.

So you can't have undead dogs without first having live dogs, so there is the canine companion expansion as well.
A very small box

This expansion comes with 6 dogs in two different colours and three different breeds. Each breed has slightly different stats and they behave as 'mini survivors' and as equipment. So the dogs can fetch gear for you or kill zombies at range. They should be a fun little add-on.

The sculpts are nice and they are detachable from their bases as well. All in all should be a quick job getting these guys painted.

There is plenty more in this box to go through but I still have to sit down and read all the new rules first and get in a couple games. With a long weekend coming up I have quite a bit to get done. This should at least make next weeks post a little more interesting!

Week 41 - Concrete Playground WIP

So there isn't much progress to report this week on the painting front but I can show some WIP shots of my concrete terrain board. I kind of got sick of cutting out MDF squares so instead of just concrete I have added in some roads too. I used 150 grit sandpaper (wet and dry to reduce warping with PVA) and it looks pretty good already. I need to give it a coat of paint pretty quickly though as I have already scraped my hands on it a couple times... Supposedly the paint takes the edge off, failing that I will give it a wipe with watered down PVA.

As you can see I still need to trim up the edges. There are four boards in total, each with a pseudo-random tile pattern (to reduce pre-measuring) and the plan is to go and work in some cracks and other features once everything is nice and set. I may even be able to get the boards out to the club tomorrow night for a quick test run, That mostly depends on getting some paint on the roads though.

Other than that I got the rest of the plasticard I need for the shipping containers, I hope to get the first 8 done next week but the priority is doing the board. I can always use the club terrain (and stuff from the other infinity players) at Rallypoint. Luckily there is a public holiday this month so I may even be able to get more done than I dare hope! I also got some new Haqqislam models which are being tacked to bases in time for club. We may even be able to ramp up to 150 points properly now. I also finally got confirmation that my Zombicide S2 has been shipped, which is something to look forward to, hopefully by the end of this week...

Week 40 - A Change of Plans

So I missed last weeks post as I was out of town for most of the weekend. To make up for it I finally finished up part two of the animal print tutorial and posted it earlier today. Enjoy. This is also the first full run with the lighting setup and I did finish up one more werewolf for the tutorial so here is the result.

So I spent most of this week working on shipping containers, right up until I ran out of plasticard that is... I have 8 ready for door details and a further 22 waiting for plasticard to do the trim. I am slightly concerned that the PVA doesn't really stick to the plastic though, I may have to adjust how I attach things when I find a replacement adhesive... I also fired up my new scroll saw today and cut out the first 'container pile.' This is the largest one I intend to make as a 3x3x3 stack. To make the next set I need more MDF but I also need more for the base board so that isn't a big issue.

I want to get as much done as I can in time for Rallypoint (November 2nd-3rd) so I can play some Infinity all weekend. This may be rather challenging with everything else going on but I'm always up for a challenge! The other thing I am working on is a steampunk costume for a workmates 50th, held at the end of January. The rush on this is that the wife (who also needs a steampunk costume) would like to wear it for her work do for Halloween. Which puts a time crunch on a little bit, since the deadlines are for about the same time. Luckily the mother-in-law has taken on the wife's costume, so I just have to work on my own costume. I've picked up all the materials so it is just a time issue. The plan is to focus on the major pieces first and then do the smaller details. So the first jobs are modifying some trousers I own and then making the vest. After that is the hat and goggles. Everything beyond that is just extra to finish it off, but unlikely to be done in time for Halloween!

With all this going on it is incredibly unlikely that I will get to 500 models painted. But you never know. Dreadball season 3 should have shipped and I have no idea what is happening with Zombicide any more... Then there is Deadzone in a month, followed by Robotech. If all goes well of course.

Tutorial - How to Paint Animal Print Part 2: Spots

So it has been a little while since I did part 1 of the animal print tutorials so if you want to get started look at part one here. The first picture I have below is the base stage, the fur blending is complete and just waiting for the patterning step. This time round I will be doing leopard spots, should there be sufficient interest I will go into some of the rarer patterns in a third instalment of these tutorials.
0. This is the base stage, what I would call a table ready fur for non-printed animals.
1. When starting patterns of any kind it is important to have a stock reference. This will make it far more realistic looking (if that is what you are going for) and generally help you make the pattern look more natural. In the image above you can see that the spots aren't uniform in shape, vary in colour and don't form neat little lines, they actually form triangles!
2. To start my leopard print off I have painted three large irregular spots on the models back. This is my starting point and from here I add more spots, each forming a triangle with two other spots already on the model. In this case I am also trying to make the spots smaller as they approach the white areas as I want to leave the front of the model mostly spot free.
3. This set of shots shows the progression of the spots as I work around the model. When I come back to finish this piece I will do much smaller spots around the edges to more gradually blend the spots back in to the fur.
4. The next step is to go back over your spots with a lighter tone. This will depend on the effect you want and the colours you are using. I have used a lighter grey than the back fur in order to make the spots more prominent. In hindsight the main fur tone could probably be a bit lighter but is fine for this tutorial. When painting these lighter spots they should overlap the base spots in places and generally be irregular. Try not to have them all make 'C' shapes in the same direction, mix it up a bit and vary how much of the black is visible.
5. Make sure to find all those black spots you did on your first pass, there will be someone who cant resist pointing out 'you missed a spot' in just about every gaming group!
6. We repeat the previous step again but this time with an even lighter shade. I have jumped straight to white but probably could have just used a lighter grey. This set of spots should be fairly small but still just as irregular as the last.  Try to overlap both of the previous layers rather than doing all of them in the middle. This is the last colour of spot I will be doing (as I used white) but for the super keen you could do a fourth set. If you did a fourth set I would suggest only doing raised edges as this will act like a natural highlight.
7. So that is how to paint leopard spots! With the larger spots done the next step would be to go back and do smaller spots on the edges. As these will be much smaller most wont have the white and the smallest wont get any grey either. If you find that your spots are too bright you can go back and daub a wash selectively on the spots in order to darken them up a bit.
8. So this is the final product. The smaller transition spots really improve the overall look and the final touches just finish it up quite nicely.

The important things to remember here are:

  1. Keep your reference handy.
  2. Irregular shapes look more natural.
  3. Watch your spacings, don't let your spots/stripes creep closer together as you go...
  4. Practice!
Practice is the important bit to take away from this. The tiger I did in the last tutorial could have done with more space between the stripes but I didn't have a reference handy so things drifted together a bit... Which is why having a reference is top of the list! Next time I will go over some more specific patterns, like these:
Until next time!

Week 38 - Making Things Clearer and New Toys

So no new painting progress this week, between the weather and distractions I wasn't able to get anything assembled and base coated soon enough to get it finished for the post. I have got some things to talk about though so it isn't all bad.

In my usual meandering around the internet I came across some helpful tips on how to set up a photo booth for photographing miniatures. So I spent some of today setting one up. I still need to print off a background and get a plinth for the miniatures but I have at least got it started. So below are photos of the old booth and some comparison shots between the two. I invested in 2 additional lights but have stopped using my painting lamp, I need to see if I have sufficient lighting with the new set up but that relies on having the background...

The old photo rig. Seriously...

The new rig, missing some key pieces... Coming soon I hope!

Photo from new rig.

Photo from old rig, miniature on the left.

So a cursory look suggests I may need more light. The new photo looks more like the actual model though and has less shadowing. I need to find my tripod for future shots (or pick up a cheap one from somewhere...) and get a proper camera. The camera is the most important part of this but I can at least try and get the best shots I can in the mean time.

I finally got out and played with my airbrush today. It took a bit of faffing about to get the paint:water ratio up high enough but I eventually got the hang of it. Below is a test panel that I was playing around on once I got the ratio right-ish. The photo looks better than the piece does in person...

I still have to invest in some appropriate tools for this kind of thing and I am way off trying this out on models but messing about with it will be fun over the coming months. I'm going to have to get some felt to try it out on too...

After the assembly session Knightwolf and I had last week I have assembled a further 11 containers, so I have 20 ready for corner plating and then detailing. I have a further 2 prototypes for cold storage containers as well. I will knock up a tutorial for them all once I get hold of sufficient corner plate as they are dreadfully easy to make and very cheap too. In the mean time I did manage to get 36 crates base coated so I will probably be working on test schemes for them tonight. I have another game or two of Infinity on Monday and I plan on bringing my Morats to the table. They do suffer in low point games but hopefully I will learn about what they can do in time for bigger games. I'm going to discuss with the guys about starting to escalate the points level by 50 per month, that way it doesn't cost us much and we can build up to the more standard 300 point game size (by Feb anyway...)

Week 37 - Crossing the Finish Line

Here we are on day 258, the 15th of September. I have officially completed 368 models as of today. This week I completed 6 more Corporation Marines as well as the last 2 Zzor, 2 more Robots, the last MVP and the Ronnie Coach, all for Dreadball. Pictures are below.

So I have learned quite a bit about myself over the last 9 months. I learned about my limits, how well I can paint at the cost of speed and how fast I can paint at the cost of quality. I learned that it takes a solid weekend of work to produce 2-3 top end quality models, one of which got me 3rd in a painting contest at a tournament. On the other end of the scale I can produce 40+ models in the same weekend if I paint them in 'board game quality' and use Army Painter dip. The compromise is that I can paint 5 models in ~2 hours to a three colour standard with minor detail work. The pile of Corp Marines I produced in the last couple weeks is proof of that.

So where am I going to go from here? Well I would like to try and reach 500 models by the end of the year. This gives me 15 weeks to complete 132 models. Very possible if I can just manage to assemble enough in that time. I also need to work on my terrain competition entry as well. I spent half a day with Knightwolf today working on some prototypes and sorting out some final materials to speed up production. I also tested some gap filler on some polystyrene for durability testing this week. Once I am confident I will purchase more gap filler and get to work on that.

From all of this I hope to start doing regular tutorials here on the blog, some of which will be things I have learned myself (like the animal print tutorials) and others will be adapting or improving tutorials I have found, making them either easier, cheaper or improving the final result. There are bound to be some posts just involving my crazy ideas, hopefully that will encourage me to actually finish some of them!

What I will add to the blog soon will be a page dedicated to finished projects, listing when they were completed, number of models and a group photo. Unfortunately several of the projects currently listed as complete will not be shortly... In particular there are quite a few models that will be arriving for Dreadball in a month or so which expand on the season 1 and 2 teams, so I will have to go back and complete those new models to truly finish those projects. I also plan on trying out each of the teams fully so I can pick one or two as 'my team(s).' These will be painted to a higher quality as I will be able to look after them more than the rest of the set. My current thinking is the Robots team but the multiplayer rules will make them a bit lacklustre. Time will tell!
