So it begins

With the holiday season coming to a close it is time to start painting! I had some spare time so decided I should finish off one model I had started way back in August. So I present to you, Bloody Barnabus.

The base still needs finishing as the water effects can take 24 hours to set. With the depth I have been making my swamp bases it will take about a week to get it filled, then on to plant-life and tidying up the rim. I expect the next lot of bases to take longer than the first week as well so for this reason I won't be counting Gatorman bases in the challenge time frame. They do however have to be based for Ides so some final finished shots will be put up once they are ready.

This weeks models are: 7 Gatorman Possie, 2 Swamp Gobbers and a Feralgeist. I am hoping that this lot will go nice and quickly given all my time off. Then I may have a mid week post with some extra models to be done by the 6th. In particular I need to finish off Maelock the Dreadbound, which I started last year and could do with starting on Caliban the Gravewalker. That would give me all of the released warlocks painted and ready to go. (I will be picking up Rask as well.) On the side I still have to prepare all the bases for these models so I have a busy week ahead of me!
Week 1 Unpainted

Confession time... Mantic had a sale on undead models. In the end I have another 130 skeletons on the way. Doh! Hopefully by painting extra models this week I will have time to do the Gators Warbeasts without falling behind on weekly model count. Then I can move on to batch painting some Mantic models!

I have thought that to end my posts I will leave you with the current total painted model count and breakdown of what has been done and is left to do. So here it is, and until next time, Play it Painted.

Pictures at last!

Sort of...

So I finally got everything ready to get undercoating some models and... the weather turns. So instead I arranged 6 months of models (183) to show just how big a job 1 models per day really is. Since the photos were taken the weather cleared up so I have under-coated enough for a few months, in particular the Gatormen models. Hopefully I can get them done over Christmas in time for some Ides practice. I also assembled 3 Dreadball teams (I knew I wouldn't be able to resist) and they too have been under-coated. I may get the Veer-myn team assembled ready for painting as well later this week. I also hope to get my terrain sorted for the Immortals Competition in late Jan. Good thing I have 2 weeks off!

Enjoy your holidays, stay safe and Play it Painted!

So many models!

Life, progress, list-building & distractions

No pictures this week unfortunately as life has impeded attempts to undercoat my models. As it turns out renovating a house takes quite a bit of time so my week has been filled with digging holes and painting doors (which unfortunately don't count towards my goal) and my paranoia prevents me from using red spray paint in the same garage space at white doors...

However progress has been made. I have assembled 100 Mantic Corporation marines and all my current Gators models in preparation for undercoating once the garage is available again. This week shall see me mounting those models on various utensils to minimise spray painting time and waste.

The 40k list building is not going well... I appear to not have enough models (ha ha ironic yes?) to be moderately competitive and not having any real knowledge of the current rule set makes list making difficult. I may have to get someone else to write up the lists and get me trained up in the new rules. The result of this leaves me wondering if the tournament should be skipped to relieve pressure on the timeline.

Further I forgot I have entered the terrain competition run by The Hamilton Immortals (NZ) which is due late January. While I have got the terrain mostly done (just a few detail touch ups to do) I have started the game boards but they need quite a bit more work. Delaying the Corp models will give me the time for getting this done, so perhaps it really is best to skip Over the Top in Feb (freeing up another weekend) and get other items done instead. (Like the Gators...)

This week saw new models arrive... Dreadball! So I now have 40 more models to assemble and paint as well as an MDF game board. The temptation to focus on these is very strong as the game looks awesome. Moreover I will have even more arriving early next year so it would be good to get ahead of the curve.

The plan for the week is to get the Corporation and Gators models under-coated, prepare the Gators bases, assemble and undercoat some Dreadball (hopefully 2 teams to get gaming over Xmas) and to find my camera and upload a shot of 400 ish models so you can see what I'm trying to tackle next year. I expect that those models may be swapped for others but a sense of scale is good (and daunting!)

Until next week, Play it Painted.

Introduction

Welcome to my painting log. This all started last year when I saw someone on the Mantic forum post a simple enough goal, paint some models. His plan however was to paint 365, one for each day of the year, by the end of that calendar year. Reading this I was inspired to do the same... and failed miserably. I am a slow painter. As I primarily play Warmachine I tend to try to paint models to a high standard, there are less of them on a table you see, so making one model look good gets you far closer to a full army than with most other game systems. This does not lend itself well to painting large armies however. My painting efforts for 2012 will have been less than 50 models, just those I needed for tournaments.

This year however I have more motivation. I have gathered up well over 1000 models in the last few years, many of which are still on their sprue or in boxes. This includes 2 full Kings of war armies, 2 full warpath armies, a Kirai Malifaux crew, about 150 points of Cryx, about 70 points of Blindwater Gators, 30 points of Legion of Everblight, some Menoth and some odds and ends that I thought would look cool when painted up. Plus anything I have forgotten... (Like dystopian wars, firestorm armada, the list goes on.) This takes up quite a bit of storage space and with the dreadball and KoW kickstarters sending me more soon I need to get some on my empty shelves! The prevalence of Armypainter products has opened up the speed painting capabilities of even the time challenged so now my excuses are dwindling as my ever growing pile of models threatens to swallow me whole. With a shift to a new home I now have a garage, giving me space for weekend gaming outside of the usual Warmachine tourney prep at the club and a pile of terrain I made for Rallypoint this year. With more gaming time available I may get to play some of the games I have picked up recently, if only I can get them assembled.

So on to the goal. I plan to paint 365 models from Jan 1st 2013 to Dec 31 2013. This will require me to paint quick and dirty for the Mantic games while also getting my Blindwater Gators ready for Ides of March. So on to the details of the plan: With Over the Top in early Feb I would like to try and paint up my Mantic Corporation to use in the 40k event. This partially hinges on me designing a set of 3 escalating lists for the 1k, 1.5K and 2K games without buying any GW models and trying not to buy any more Mantic models unless absolutely necessary. (The desire to field a guard swarm is strong!) This entails somewhere in the order of 150 guardsmen in just 1 month unless I borrow some tanks, which may be necessary to fill out points. Quick and dirty is the aim of the game here, I'm going for a WWII German style uniform and army painter dark shade to speed up the whole process. Bases will be fairly bland with just the standard brown gravel and static grass to add a little colour to the whole model.

March brings on Ides, and a pair of Blindwater lists at 42 points. (With common models.) While this should be less than 30 models the expectation is to put more time and energy into each model. Luckily I already have the scheme chosen and a couple of the models already painted. Unluckily I am doing swamp bases which require a lot of work. Time may dictate stopping half way through the Corporation models to work on the Gators, hopefully the Armypainter spray will speed up the priming process.

All goes well my first 180 or so models will be done by March. Yikes. Worth a try right? In the build up to D-Day I will post some pics of the assembled and primed models. That isn't cheating right?
